Why Go Veggie?

The site for people who care about animals.

The title of this website is itself a question, and the answers to that question are probably as numerous as the people who ask them. Everyone has their own reason for thinking about going veggie, and for people who like lists there is one detailing just some of those reasons elsewhere on the site. I can only tell you my own answer to the question. My reason for becoming vegetarian has nothing to do with health or diet; nothing to do with wanting to live forever or having clear skin and pleasant breath; not even because I wanted to protect the environment that we depend upon for our existance. No, my personal reason for being vegetarian is that I care about animals. I don't want to be a link in that awful chain of suffering and death that is the lot of an animal born into the food chain.

There are a few poems on this site. Some are lighthearted and funny but most of them are not. You might even say that they are hard going, hard to read, why is that? It's because they awake something within that has lain dormant up to now. It has always been there but it has never been given freedom of expression; you have suppressed it very effectively; it is called compassion. A deep seated recognition within your soul that the animals that you have been eating also have a soul, a life force that is as sacred as your own. Not all of the poems are about vegetarianism or even about animals directly; some are about the devastating effect that we are having on our planet, our home. I hope that you will have the courage to read the information contained within this website. Then you will be in a position to make a choice. You might choose to continue to eat meat or you may decide to become vegetarian or vegan. Should you make the latter choice I will be pleased to offer you any help that I can. This statement by Caroline Lucas MEP should give you something to think about. She said "A vegan driving a four by four vehicle does less damage to the environment through global warming than a meat eater on a bicycle". To hear her complete speech Click here.
